Mitochondrial health - helping prevent Alzheimers, chronic fatigue and other issues

"Let's get this going to talk about mitochondrial health. And I'm going to be targeting mitochondria for the biohacker's health optimization. There is unfortunately now overlap with mitochondria and chronic illness, so if you like all biohackers know your goal is to prevent illness from happening you need to Your Mitochondria and Heal Your MItochondria.

You want to work your mitochondria, you want to be doing high-intensity exercise, want to be fast, and doing the cold exposure make your mitochondria work, make it go through, make it divide, and go through autophagy. So if you want mitochondrial health you need to love your mitochondria.”

Work Your Mitochondria - Exercise/ Fast/Cold Exposure

Heal Your MItochondria-  NAD/Red light/ MitoQ/Sauna and repeat.

What’s Important About The Mitochondria:

- ATP Production
-Detox
- Enzyme Production
- Production of Heat
- Intracellular Calcium regulation
 - Managing oxidative stress
- Apoptosis (cell death)
- NAD production

"A little biochemistry. This is the electron transport chain. A couple of things that everybody knows about nad, people may know about cytochrome c, which is where red light works on ATP reduction on. You've heard of a red light? Part of the reason why it's helping your mitochondria is that it works and produces energy through that transport chain.

The tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, also known as the Krebs or citric acid cycle, is the main source of energy for cells and an important part of aerobic respiration. The cycle harnesses the available chemical energy of acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl CoA) into the reducing power of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH).

Mitochondrial Health and What Can Go Wrong

-Autophagy/Mitophagy
- ER stress/Unfolded Protein Response
- Oxidative Stress
- Nutrients (TCA, ETC)
- Leakage/ Damage to membrane/ETC chain or cytochrome issues
- Mitochondrial Biogenesis
- Fission/ Fusion
- Inflammation
- Proteostasis
- Senescence

“There was a study that some pro suggested that about 80% of a chronic illness is from mitochondrial dysfunction. Diseases caused by mitochondrial dysfunction:

-Diabetes
- Obesity
- Cardiovascular disease
- Stroke
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Parkinson’s Disease
- PCOS
- Infertility
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Bipolar Disorder
- Inflammatory Bowel Disorder (Crohn’s/UC)

Mitochondrial Health and Lifestyle

Exercise  increases mitochondrial biogenesis, autophagy, mitophagy

- Red Light Therapy works  on cytochrome C, decreases inflammation,  increase nitric oxide, and helps with ATP production, may help neurodegenerative  disease
- Sleep maintains a normal circadian rhythm. Lack of sleep can damage mitochondria
- Fasting-  Increases Mitophagy, Increases NRF2, Decreased NF-KB, increases Sirt enzyme
- Cold Exposure- Increase Mitophagy/Autophagy, increases mitochondrial biogenesis

“When I talk to my patients about anything in terms of biohacking and functional medicine, it all starts with the foundation. I can put you on every supplement, whatever it is, if you're not exercising it's going to increase your mitochondrial biogenesis, it's going to boost autophagy.”

Supplements:

- Melatonin
- Alpha Lipoic Acid
- Spermidine
- NRF2
- Mots-c
- Human
- SS-31
- AKG
- Urolithin A
- rapamycin
- methylene blue
- Metformin
- Fisetin
- Mito-q

“Autophagy is a process where the cells break down dysfunctional and old components of the cell through a lysosomal dependent regulated mechanism. This will help to degrade malformed proteins as well.

Problems can occur with lysosomes, the tubules, the synaptic membranes among others; Presumed treatments  Spermidine, Metformin, resveratrol, nrf2, and others. This issue is seen in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s  Huntington’s disease, and more”

“The mitochondria use the transfer of electrons throughout the ETC and mitochondrial process. Excess ROS occur from the  ETC, aerobic respiration and this can damage the mitochondrial membrane, proteins, damage DNA, and other components of the mitochondria, Cause damage to ETC, Leads to inflammation. DAMPS and Pumps. Diseases associated-Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, Obesity. Treatments are MITOq, SS-31,  Glutathione,  NRF2”

Mitochondrial Biogenesis

“Mitochondrial Biogenesis is the process of the development of increased mitochondria in number and size.

It works via PGC1-alpha. This can be stimulated by exercise caloric restriction, cold exposure, NAD+, metformin, and other AMPK boosters There is also a relationship with NRF2.

Decreased PGC1 has been seen in conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Diabetes, and other conditions. Treatments include  Urolithin A,  Resveratrol. R-Lipoic Acid, Quercetin

Inflammation and The Mitochondria

DAMPS- Damage associated molecular pattern and

PAMPS- Pathology associated molecular pattern

These molecules are caused by damage to the mitochondria and leakage from the mitochondria. They activate inflammatory cytokines such NF-KB, IL-6, NLRP3 inflammasome. They trigger the immune system to respond. Can be due to infection, oxidative stress, and other mechanisms.

This has been seen in Alzheimer’s and neurodegenerative conditions.

Treatment MitoQ,  Melatonin, Exogenous Ketones and possibly others.”

“Fission/Fusion issues- An imbalance in fission or fusion can set off the mitochondrial process. Abnormal fission or fusion can lead to neuroinflammation, increased oxidative stress, decreased TCAm increased neurodegeneration. May be helped with Rapamycin. This is seen in Glioblastoma Multiforme. Deficient enzymes for TCA-  Oxaloacetate (OAA), Alpha Keto Glutarate (AKG), NAD +”

“Mito DNA mutations damaged mito DNA leads to inflammation and inflammation cascades like NLRP3 inflammasome   Treat with Mito Q  Possibly Melatonin, exogenous ketones. Problems with Autophagy/Mitophagy Treat. Oxidative Stress- In microglia may lead to neurodegeneration. Can also lead to problems with ETC. Deficiencies in mitochondrial biogenesis Urolithin a, NMN. Problems with fission/fusion. Damage to cardiolipin (SS-31)  Inner membrane of mitochondria. Lack of Sleep/Abnormal Circadian rhythm. Low PGC1 alpha leads to problems with mitochondrial biogenesis.
